Everyone is talking about AI. Most of the advice you read is either breathless hype or paranoid doom. Neither helps you get your invoice out by Thursday.
This is a practical list. Tools that remote workers and freelancers actually use, what they're good for, and where they fall short.
**Claude (Anthropic)** — Best for long-form writing, nuanced analysis, and complex document drafting. Handles large context windows well, so you can paste in an entire contract or brief and get intelligent responses. The model that powers the assistant on this site.
**ChatGPT** — Broad capability, huge plugin ecosystem, solid for general-purpose tasks. The GPT-4o model is fast and capable for everyday use.
**Notion AI** — If you're already in Notion, the native AI integration saves context-switching. Good for summarizing notes, drafting from bullet points, and database queries.
**Practical use**: First draft generation is the killer use case. Spend 20 minutes prompting and editing instead of 2 hours writing from scratch. Don't publish unedited AI output — edit it like you would a contractor's work.
**GitHub Copilot** — Still the best autocomplete tool for developers. Understands context across files, suggests entire functions, and explains unfamiliar code.
**Cursor** — AI-native code editor built on VS Code. Better than Copilot for larger refactors and architectural decisions. Worth switching to if you write code daily.
**Practical use**: Use AI for boilerplate, documentation, and explaining code you didn't write. Don't trust it with security-sensitive logic without careful review.
**Perplexity** — Search with citations. Useful when you need a quick briefing on an unfamiliar topic and want to verify the sources. Better than Google for complex questions.
**Claude + documents** — Upload PDFs, spreadsheets, or long articles and ask questions about them. Faster than reading everything yourself when you need specific information.
**Midjourney** — Still the best for atmospheric, concept-level imagery. Good for mood boards, presentation visuals, and social media.
**Canva AI** — If you're not a designer but need presentable visuals, Canva's AI features (Magic Design, text-to-image) get you to "good enough" fast.
Be honest with yourself about this list:
AI is leverage. It makes your hours more valuable. It doesn't replace the hours.
Here's something interesting: AI makes workations more viable, not less.
When your baseline output per hour increases by 30–50% through good AI tool use, you can afford to take the afternoon off for a hike and still hit your weekly targets. The math works in your favor.
That's the Nomad Workation model: AI-augmented remote work in the morning, Alps in the afternoon. Come to our AI Workation in Braunwald and we'll show you exactly how it works.
